Label-free microscopy using various signal mechanisms not based on florescence has been around for years but has seen comparatively little uptake by users. Sunney Xie's report of Stimulated Raman Scattering (SRS) microscopy in Science last year looks like it has the potential to greatly increase the impact of this methodology.
