This paper provided insights into mechanisms of the elementary step of monomeric water motions, and enriched our knowledge of one-molecule science. The findings, of the orientational preferences and correlation for the atop-to-atop motions of an H2O on Al{100}, have widespread interests in research communities. The authors also provided theoretical evidence that the favored mechanisms can be classical hopping coupled with either the molecular flipping or in-plane reorientations, in contrast to the simple translational motions; while quantum tunneling assisted motion is not favored for an H2O via the nearest neighbor diffusion. The paper showed that the symmetry match between an H2O and the surface square lattice controlled molecular mechanisms of the surface motions.

The binary-phase structure of the grating polarizers is easy to mass produce. The theoretical efficiency is high (>85%) and devices have high polarization isolation (>1000:1). The deep-etched fused silica grating should functions as a good device for polarization separation in a variety of practical application. The significant scientific meaning is that an isotropic material, such as fused silica, can be transformed into a polarization-separation device by introducing an artificial subwavelength structure.

Nowadays to prepare pure metal nanoparticles and pure nanocrystalline metal bulk materials is still very hard. Especially, to prepare pure rare-earth nanoparticles and nanocrystalline bulks is a big challenge in the field of nanoscience and nanotechnology. This paper proposed a novel technique to prepare ultra-fine nanocrystalline RE bulks with advanced properties. The essential importance is that the proposed route and techniques can be extended to prepare any nano-metallic materials that are active in the open air, thus it makes possible to study structures and properties of many metallic nanomaterials that could be hardly prepared before.
