Patient-Specific Stem Cell Lines Derived from Human Parthenogenetic Blastocysts
-

The paper presents a new method for obtaining embryonic stem cells. Instead of using blastocysts from in vitro fertilization, they artificially stimulate oocytes to begin cleavage to form a parthenote (in this case, an embryo initiated without sperm). They derive the embryonic stem cells from the inner cell mass. This technique would allow patient-derived stem cells to be derived for egg donors. Parthenogenic human embryos do not develop to term so this method might be less ethically objectionable to some as it doesn't destroy an embryo capable of forming an individual person. - Comment on this subject: 0 comments made
